Your "Why" for Getting Healthy

Your "Why" for Getting Healthy

At Vida, we often hear “I want to get healthier” or “I want to lose weight.”

To do that—and achieve long-term success—find your why and truly connect to it.

How? Start with defining what healthier means to you. Get really specific. For example,  your definition of healthier may include losing 30 pounds, controlling your A1c if you have diabetes, and becoming fit.

Now, dig deeper.

Think about what you will miss out on if you do not improve your health.

Finally, ask yourself these questions.

  1. Why do I want to lose 30 pounds?

  2. What benefit will I receive from controlling my A1c?

  3. How will becoming fit change my life?

  4. Why are these goals important to me?

Write your answer out in a journal or other place that is special to you. Use words that are positive.

This is your motivation, it is your why!

Your answer may be similar to this:

A loss of 30 pounds coupled with getting fit through healthy eating and exercise will allow me to feel comfortable in my body. My energy will improve, my clothes will fit better, and I will gain confidence along with better health. I will have the energy to play with my kids, go out with friends, and be a more active partner. Losing weight, exercising, and eating well will help me to control my A1c so that my doctor and I can discuss reducing, or even getting off of, my medication.

With your goals in mind, work with your Vida Health Coach to make a sustainable plan that is uniquely you.

This sustainable plan will include breaking down your overall goals into manageable weekly SMART goals.

The SMART acronym asks for you to set goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Bound.

A specific goal is a goal in which you pinpoint exactly what you wish to achieve. To make this goal measurable, decide how you’ll track your progress. An achievable and relevant goal will be one that is possible for you to reach. You also feel that it is important and will help you get to your vision of a healthy you. A time-based goal is one you can reach within a reasonable time frame.

So what is important to you? What are your goals and what will you gain from achieving them?
