Vida Client of the Week: Michelle

Meet Michelle. She’s a wife, a mother of an adorable toddler, and has embraced a mindful approach to her health. Michelle’s husband works for Steelcase in Michigan, which offers Vida Health to employees and their spouses and partners.

Health change catalyst. After the birth of her daughter, Michelle wanted some guidance about eating healthy and managing her weight. “I needed a little kick start,” she says.  She was looking for motivation to get the cardio and resistance workouts she knew would help her feel good and be an active mom. Michelle chose Coach Gretchen for her personal health coach.

Fast forward—4 months later. Michelle is elated to report that she’s surpassed her weight loss goal. She started at 141 pounds and has reached a healthy 126. She says: “Besides the health benefits, I've gained an appreciation of my body and all that it's capable of!” In fact, she currently is finishing up a yoga teacher training course and will teach classes at a local studio.

What's worked for Michelle:

  • The healthy plate: Michelle was aware she was eating too many processed carbohydrate foods. She and Coach Gretchen started by looking at photos Michelle took of her meals and logged in the Vida app. Gretchen recommended that Michelle plan meals using the healthy plate method, which encourages people to fill at least half their plate with veggies and fruits. Michelle found this to be a great way to eat healthier and manage portions.

  • Mindful eating: “We started with eating clean and cutting out processed and refined foods,” Michelle says. “From there, we tailored my nutrition to what I was feeling in my body.” For Michelle, that meant cutting back on grains to help with some digestion issues and balancing her carb and protein intake.

  • Planning. Michelle found it really useful during her coaching sessions to discuss her plan for the coming week—how much cardio and when she’d do it, for example. She targeted 60-100 minutes of physical activity each day, 6 days a week.

  • A routine: “I've never been a morning person,” says Michelle, but a goal was to wake up before her daughter so she could have some time to read, shower, and get ready for the day. This meant getting to bed earlier and "unplugging" from technology at least an hour before going to bed. That routine has helped her get enough sleep yet still wake up before 7 a.m.—right on goal!

Thank you, coach. Michelle was impressed that Coach Gretchen was on the phone with her for nearly an hour during their first call, to get to know Michelle and her specific health goals. “Gretchen has been amazing! She has helped tailor goals and my plan to help me get to my healthiest  self,” Michelle says. “She's helped me get to a state of mindfulness with exercise, nutrition, and my overall routine.”

“Change has to start with you, by listening to yourself. It’s important to be mindful of your activity, and what you’re putting into your body.”
