Vida Client of the Week: Don
Meet Don. He’s an active retiree and lives in Massachusetts.
Health change catalyst. “I was carrying some extra weight. I knew about wellness and healthy eating, and that it takes discipline. But it’s easier said than done.” Before he retired, Don started most work days at 5 or 6 a.m., and usually didn’t get home until 7 p.m. “I didn’t have much time to take care of myself,” he recalls. Arthritis, two knee replacements, and spinal stenosis made being active a challenge.
Don’s health plan selected him to participate in Vida. That was the nudge he needed. “I wanted to improve my overall wellness,” Don says.
Don started off with Coach Art and then worked with Coach Steve for about 8 months, for a total of 12 months with Vida. “Steve was motivational, consultative, and always sought buy-in from me. He was thoroughly concerned with my well-being," Don says.
Don started to set exercise goals. He’s a morning person, so would wake up to spend 30 or 40 minutes on the treadmill in his basement. Some biking and, of course, stretching were feel-good essentials. Don and Steve also discussed what type of food Don could eat to boost his nutrition.
Fast forward—12 months later. “I had significant weight loss over the past 12 months,” Don says. “Specifically, 13 pounds. Additionally, my overall wellness had improved to a point where I was able to push myself to new levels of achievement.”
What's worked for Don:
Accountability: The weekly calls with Coach Steve, in which they planned short-term and long-term goals, encouraged Don to higher levels of achievement—whether in regular exercise sessions or healthy eating choices.
The Healthy Plate: “My family are not necessarily going to cook specially for me. I was also used to eating all that was on my plate,” Don says. Now, he remembers the strategy of filling half his plate with vegetables.
Trade-offs: Don also realized it’s OK to plan trade-offs. “I’m not going to be punished for having a donut,” Don says. Coach Steve reassured him, and helped Don own his choices.
Thank you, coach. “Coach Steve wa my guiding light. He was understanding, knowledgeable, motivating, and a true professional,” Don says. “I would like to thank United Healthcare and Vida for the opportunity to work together in an effort to improve my overall wellness.”
Don’s words of wisdom about Vida:
“I had someone in my corner. I’ve totally changed my mindset in how to approach well-being.”
