Keep your Skin Healthy and Radiant
Your skin is the largest organ in your body and it has a variety of important functions. It helps protect your inner organs, warms you up and cools you down, and it is thought of as a direct reflection of how healthy you are on the inside. Here are some tips to keep your skin healthy and radiant:
Quit Smoking! Smoking contributes to premature aging and adding additional wrinkles. It also decreases the amount of oxygen and nutrients that the skin needs to stay healthy by narrowing the blood vessels that reach the outermost layers of your skin.
Use Sunscreen. The sun can be harsh on the skin, causing age spots, wrinkles, and potentially causing skin cancer. Be sure to apply at least an SPF of 15 when in direct sunlight; especially if you have a family history of melanoma, or seek shade to avoid prolonged sun exposure.
Eat a Healthy Diet. Eating a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins will keep your skin in tip top shape. Some foods that are particularly great for your skin are salmon, blueberries, spinach, walnuts, and believe it or not dark chocolate! Make sure that the chocolate is truly dark, it needs to be at least 85% cocoa.
Manage Your Stress. If you are experiencing stress on a regular basis, your skin will show it. Learn to manage your stress by meditating, setting limits and boundaries, and practicing yoga. Yoga increase your circulation which is not only essential for stress management, but for your skin health as well.
Get Your Beauty Sleep. Make sure that you are getting at least 8 hours of sleep. When you sleep, your skin repairs from all of the external damage it faced during the day.
Drink Water. Drinking water helps prevent dry skin and premature wrinkling. Be sure to drink 8 8-ounce glasses of water a day to keep your skin healthy.
Moisturize. Be sure to moisturize your skin. It is best to keep your skin slightly damp when you get out of the shower and then apply moisturizer. If you’re sick of all of the products at the drugstore, try a natural moisturizer like coconut oil -It is a great way to add the natural oils back into your skin, it smells nice, and you can also cook with it, a pretty good deal!
