Flexing Your Willpower Muscle

Flexing Your Willpower Muscle

When the going gets tough, what will you do? Willpower (self-regulation) is kind of like a muscle. If your brain is physically or nutritionally depleted it is very difficult to make good choices. We often blame ourselves for not having enough "willpower" and making poor choices. To put it simply when our mental energy is depleted and we have not been eating well our brains actually adapt by shutting down certain areas of the brain while other parts of the brain become more active. The other parts of the brain that take over - well they are not so good at helping us make the healthiest choices. The two most important things you can do to avoid a drain in willpower is to take "brain breaks" and to make sure you are well nourished. Here are some ways to flex your willpower muscle.

1. 10 MINUTES OF MEDITATION

2. WORK ON YOUR POSTURE

3. KEEP A FOOD DIARY

4. CREATE AND MEET SELF-IMPOSED DEADLINES

5. KEEP TRACK OF YOUR SPENDING

6. SQUEEZE A HANDGRIP

7. CARRY AROUND SOMETHING TEMPTING

9. BE MORE MINDFUL OF YOUR AUTOMATIC DECISIONS
