How Can I Tip the Balance In My Favor and Lose Weight?
How much do you need to tip the balance in order to lose weight? The amount of intake and usage of calories varies from person to person. But in general, there is a formula we can use. It’s based on two facts:
- 1 pound of body fat stores about 3,500 calories
- Slow, Steady weight loss (1 to 2 pounds or so a week) is the best way to lose body fat. Quick losses of large amounts of weight can mean water or muscle loss, which is unhealthy!
- To lose 1 pound in a week, you need to tip your energy balance by 3,500 calories in the week, or 500 calories each day for 7 days. To lose 2 pounds in a week, you need to tip your energy balance by 7,000 calories in the week, or 1000 calories each day for 7 days.
Remember, the best way to tip the balance is to change both food AND activity. Keep in mind daily what changes you can make to become more active and consume fewer calories. Record both your food AND activity to keep track of your progress and be sure to review your Balance with your coach.
